This season was off to a slow start for last seasons Stanley Cup champion, the Washington Capitals. The Caps just beat the Islanders (who are coached by former Caps coach, Barry Trotz) 4-1 with Tom Wilson scoring two goals (he has six goals, and six assists in the eight games he has played) since returning from his twenty game suspension, that began in the preseason. Many people believe Wilson is a dirty player and can only help the Capitals by being the teams “bruiser.” In the eight games he has played he has twelve points (also +/- of 6) and the Caps are 7-1.
The Caps are rolling now, and have regained a grasp of first place of the Metropolitan Division. Ovechkin has also been off to a hot start with 18 goals which is top 3 in the league, which is where he seems to stand every year. The past few games, the Caps have been without Evgeny Kuznetsov and T.J. Oshie who are two starters on the Caps power play and key players on the Caps top lines. This just shows the depth of the Caps and that they want to repeat what they did last year.
Though the Caps (31 points) are starting to hit their stride, the NHL is full of so many great teams this year. The Lightning (35), Sabres (34 and yes, Sabres), and Leafs (34) all have more points than the Caps and they are battling to top the Atlantic division. In the Central Division, the Preds also have more points than the Caps with 35. Hopefully, the Caps keep it up. #OurYearAGAIN
