A Fan’s Reflection on the Bucks’ Season

As a die-hard Bucks fan going into the 2018-19 season I did not expect us to have the best record in the league or be a couple possessions away from going to the NBA Finals. Seeing this team this season made me proud to be a Milwaukee Bucks fan and how far this franchise has come.

I remember the 2012-13 season where we made a horrible move trading Tobias Harris for JJ Redick to make a half-hearted push to the playoffs just to get smacked by the Big 3 Heat.

During the next off-season, I remember us drafting Giannis Antetokounmpo and thinking “Who the hell is this guy.” I remember watching grainy highlights from Greece and thinking maybe he could become a solid NBA starter. Never in my wildest dreams did I think the young lanky kid I met outside the Wisconsin Milk Barn at the Wisconsin State Fair would become the NBA MVP.

Giannis’ rookie year the Bucks had the worst record in the NBA, drew the least amount of fans in the league, and there were murmurs about the Bucks moving to Seattle. There was a website organized by fans called SaveOurBucks.com and I really thought the Bucks were going to be leaving Milwaukee. Luckily, the Bucks were sold to Wes Edens and Marc Lasry and Herb Kohl pledged 100 million dollars towards a new stadium. The state of Wisconsin approved funding for a new stadium and things were looking good.

Fast forward to the 2019-20 season the new Fiserv Forum opens with a bang. The Bucks have the best record in the league and the NBA MVP (in my opinion). The new stadium is beautiful and the area around the arena is spectacular. The Bucks have improved the image of the city of Milwaukee and I cannot wait for the future. This season showed what is possible and we are just a few moves away from being in the NBA Finals. Fear the Deer.
