Off Tackle Empire
The Hoosiers have reached the halfway point of their season amassing a 4-2 record coming off a strong 35-0 win over Rutgers last week. As IU enters the last half of its season, let’s take a look at my original predictions for the season and give them a little update.
10/19 @ Maryland
Original Prediction: Maryland Wins 38-35
The Terps just got destroyed 40-14 by a 1-4 Purdue team missing its starting quarterback and best player in Rondale Moore. I still expect this to be a tricky game for the Hoosiers, even though Maryland is struggling with their own injury issues.
IU Wins 38-24
10/26 @ Nebraska
Original Prediction: Nebraska Wins 28-13
Nebraska has been more inconsistent than I anticipated to start the year. The loss to a less than great Colorado team early in the season was disappointing and the no-shows against Ohio State and Minnesota are inexplicable. However, I still expect Nebraska to be a very difficult road challenge for the Hoosiers and come away with the win.
Nebraska Wins 24-21
11/2 vs Northwestern
Original Prediction: IU Wins 21-17
Going into this season I thought Northwestern would challenge for the Big Ten West title and I was dead wrong. The Wildcats have been the victims of a tough schedule and a shaky quarterback situation. Northwestern’s defense, however, has been quite good and could be a strong challenge for IU. Regardless, I like the Hoosiers even more in this game than I did before.
IU Wins 24-10
11/16 @ Penn State
Original Prediction: Penn State Wins 42-17
In my pre-season predictions, I said Penn State will not be as good as they’ve been in the past couple years, which is correct, but Penn State is still a really talented football team. Penn State currently stands undefeated and very well could remain that way coming into the matchup with the Hoosiers. This game has trap game written all over it, with the Nittany Lions traveling to Columbus the following week to take on Ohio State, but Penn State has too much talent to not take down the Hoosiers.
Penn State wins 35-21
11/23 vs Michigan
Original Prediction: Michigan Wins 28-24
Senior day in Bloomington is certainly going to be an interesting matchup. The Hoosiers will be looking to spring the upset on the Wolverines for the first time in an eternity, while Michigan will be looking to keep its slim Big Ten East title hopes alive.
Michigan Wins 21-17
11/30 @ Purdue
Original Prediction: Purdue Wins 28-24
The Boilermakers season has completely derailed through week 7 with only 2 wins on the resume and their two most important players, quarterback Elijah Sindelar and wide receiver Rondale Moore both hurt. However, Purdue should be back to relatively full strength by this point in the season and will stop the Hoosiers from reaching 7 wins for the first time since 2007.
Purdue Wins 35-31
Final Record 6-6
Original Record Prediction 5-7
This halfway prediction update only has one more game falling in the Hoosiers’ favor, but IU fans, players and coaches would all be pleased with a 6-6 record and a bowl appearance. Watching the progression of quarterback Michael Penix and the IU defense will be important to the Hoosiers earning the six wins as I have predicted or perhaps even more.
