Indiana Football has always taken a backseat to the basketball team. Indiana has long been a “basketball school”. Rightly so, the basketball team has brought the school five national championships to date and countless other Big Ten titles. This football season, however, feels different than previous years. It doesn’t just feel different, it is different.
After winning on the road against Maryland, Indiana has now improved to 5-2 on the season. They’re just one win away from bowl eligibility for the first time multiple years and have already matched last season’s win total. They have a gifted quarterback in Michael Penix who has been excellent all season when healthy. Though he left the game Saturday against Maryland, he should be okay for the rest of the season.
Assuming Penix is healthy, the Hoosiers have 3 very winnable games left: Nebraska, Northwestern and Purdue. Outside of those they have Penn State on the road and Michigan at home which could be potential upset bids for the Hoosiers.
Indiana Football is having its best season in years and they could be in line to put together a resume that has them ranked by the end of the season. That’s something even the basketball program has not been able to say much in the past few seasons.
