Whole Nine Sports
It’s nine weeks into the season and the Cincinnati Bengals are now in line for the first overall pick in the 2020 NFL Draft. With the Dolphins surprising win over the Jets, the Bengals now own the only winless record in the league. Depending on how you look at it, this could be the best case scenario for the team. Ryan Finley could be a long term option moving forward. However, I wouldn’t be surprised if fans are calling for a quarterback come draft time.
Looking at the rest of the schedule, Cincinnati still has to play the Jets and the Dolphins. Tanking is not very common in the NFL, but if you can guarantee to get the guy you want with the first overall pick, why not? Elite quarterbacks are hard to find and can completely change a franchise’s future. Where things stand now, Tua Tagovailoa is the presumed top quarterback in the 2020 draft class. If the Bengals find themselves with the worst record in the NFL at season’s end, they can lock in a potential franchise-changing player.
Wanting your team to be the worst in the NFL is tough to endure. Trading off one year for future success doesn’t seem too bad though. There’s no guarantee that any of the college quarterbacks will pan out, but having your pick of the litter at least helps. Whether it’s Tua, Justin Herbert, Joe Burrow, or any of the other college QB’s, Cincinnati is looking for an identity change in the future. The “Tank for Tua” might be a go in the Queen City.
